Alright, so tonight was game night. Decided to really sit down and watch the Mavericks take on the Magic. Wasn’t just casual viewing this time, I wanted to actually pay attention, you know?

Grabbed my usual spot on the couch. Got my drink ready, notepad nearby just in case something jumped out at me. Sometimes I like to jot down little things, just my own observations, nothing fancy. It’s sort of a ritual, helps me focus.
Watching the Flow
So the game started. First quarter was a bit back and forth, like they were testing the waters. I tried focusing specifically on how Dallas was running their offense, especially watching how Luka Doncic directed things. Then I’d consciously switch my attention to Orlando, trying to see their defensive setups against him.
It’s funny when you make yourself watch this way. You start picking up on different details compared to just watching as a fan. Things like:
- The subtle shifts in momentum after a turnover or a big three-pointer.
- Those small defensive rotations that you might normally miss.
- Even just the players’ body language, you can sometimes tell when frustration is setting in.
I made a point to watch Franz Wagner for the Magic whenever he had the ball, trying to see how he initiated. And for the Mavs, watching Kyrie Irving move without the ball is always a lesson in itself, even if you’re just sitting on your sofa.
Man, some of those plays down the stretch were nail-biters.
Got pretty loud in my living room for a minute there, totally forgot about my little observation practice.
End Result of My ‘Practice’
So, what did I really get out of this focused watching session? Honestly, not some super deep tactical breakdown. My notepad ended up with just a couple of scribbles. I got caught up in the excitement of the game itself, which, let’s be real, happens most of the time.
But the attempt was the thing. Trying to consciously observe player matchups and coaching adjustments, even for just parts of the game, makes it more engaging on a different level. It wasn’t about becoming an expert analyst overnight. It was just about trying a slightly different way to experience the game I was watching.

Finished the game, felt like I’d actually engaged my brain a bit more than usual. Even if my main takeaway was just reaffirming how unpredictable these games can be. Yeah, it was a good way to spend the evening.
