Alright, so you wanna know how that fella, Babe Ruth, you know, the baseball guy, how he kicked the bucket? Well, lemme tell ya, it wasn’t pretty.
The Beginning of the End
It all started back in ’46, see? Babe, he started feelin’ real bad. Said his eye hurt somethin’ fierce, over on the left side, and he couldn’t swallow right. Like somethin’ was stuck, you know? So, he went to this fancy hospital in New York City, French Hospital they called it. Them doctors, they poked and prodded, and what they found, well, it wasn’t good. Not good at all.
They said he had this… this… whatchamacallit… a tumor, yeah, a mean ol’ tumor, right at the bottom of his skull. And that ain’t all, no sir. They found somethin’ else in his neck too. Called it some big ol’ fancy name, but it was cancer, plain and simple. Throat cancer, they said.
- Bad pain in his left eye.
- Couldn’t swallow food right.
- Doctors found a tumor in his skull.
- Also had cancer in his neck.
The Fight
Now, Babe, he was a fighter, always was. So, he fought this cancer thing the best he could. Them doctors, they tried all sorts of things. Gave him some kinda medicine, hormones they called ’em. And they even cut him open, tried to get that nasty tumor out. And then, they did somethin’ new, somethin’ called radiation. Burned that cancer out, they hoped.
For a while there, it seemed like maybe, just maybe, he’d beat it. But that cancer, it was a sneaky one. It came back, see? Just when everyone thought he was gettin’ better, it came right back. Those doctors, they tried zappin’ it again with that radiation, but it was no use. That cancer, it had a hold on him tight.
The End
So, on August 16th, 1948, in New York City, that big fella, Babe Ruth, well, he finally lost his fight. Fifty-three years old, that’s all he was. Too young, if you ask me. But that cancer, it don’t care how old you are, or how good you were at hittin’ a baseball. It just takes ya.
After He Was Gone
After he passed, they took him to Yankee Stadium, you know, where he used to play ball. Left him right there at the main entrance for two whole days. Can you believe it? Thousands and thousands of folks, they lined up, just to say goodbye to the Babe. Then they took him to some big church, St. Patrick’s somethin’ or other, and then finally, they buried him over in Hawthorne.
So that’s the story, plain and simple. That’s how Babe Ruth died. Cancer got him, just like it gets so many others. A real shame, it was. He was a good fella, that Babe. A real good fella.
One last thing.
Babe Ruth , they said he was the best baseball player of all times and folks loved him a whole lot. He borned in Baltimore. That is the story how that Babe Ruth died. Sad, huh? But that’s life I guess.
