That Matt Cassel, I tell ya, he’s a real football fella. Born in May of 1982, I heard. That boy, always running around with that pigskin. He played for them Trojans, some college team, way back when. Big strong boy, always was.
Then, them Patriots, they picked him up. He was some kinda late pick in 2005, I think it was. Seventh round? Sounds about right. Didn’t matter, though. He made somethin’ of himself. Good for him, I say. That’s a lot of years for a boy and their football career.
He got paid good money, too. Lots of it! Millions, I hear! Played for the Kansas City Chiefs, signed a big ol’ contract with them. Sixty-three million dollars! Can you believe that? Guaranteed money, too. Lord have mercy, that’s more money than I’ve seen in my whole life! He was making over ten million a year. Ten million! Just for playing football. It’s a crazy world, ain’t it?
He was moved around, though. Traded, they call it. From the Patriots to them Chiefs. Got traded with another fella, some linebacker named Mike Vrabel. They swapped ’em for some draft pick, whatever that is. Some coach, Belichick, said some nice things about ’em. Said they was good players. That’s nice, I guess.
He played a lot of football, that Matt. He’s what they call a quarterback. He throws the ball, you see. He was a backup for some big shot named Tom Brady for a while. That Brady is one of the big names, they all say. But Matt, he got his chance to shine, too. Started a game against the New York Jets in 2008, and they won! Good for him. He earned it, I bet.
- He started a lot of games. Over eighty, they say.
- Threw for a whole heap of yards. Thousands, I reckon.
- Completed a bunch of passes, too.
- He was a backup to Tom Brady, but he also backed up another big name, Matthew Stafford, they say.
- That means he knows a thing or two, to learn from them two!
He was born in Northridge, Los Angeles. Heard that on the radio once. Big city boy. But he played like a country boy, tough and strong. That’s what they say, anyway.
He played for a bunch of teams, that Matt. Besides the Chiefs and the Patriots. Can’t rightly remember all of ’em, but I know he moved around a lot. That’s the way it is in that football business, I suppose. They go where the money is, and Matt, he made a lot of it! He’s all done playing now, though. Retired, they call it. He’s got to rest them old bones, I reckon.
Matt Cassel, that quarterback, he’s made his mark. He went from being a backup to making millions. Not bad for a boy from Los Angeles, huh? That boy got his chances in those years. Did alright for himself. He’s a real success story, that’s what he is. He showed ’em all what he could do, and they paid him good money for it. Good for him, I say. He earned it. He played hard, and he played good. That’s all you can ask for. He did what he could. That’s Matt Cassel for ya.
And that Mike Vrabel, he went on to coach. Even coached against Matt one time, I believe it was. That’s what they said on the radio. That football world is a small world, I tell ya. Those two were teammates and then opponents. Funny how things turn out, ain’t it? But that’s a story for another day. Today, we’re talkin’ about Matt. And Matt, he did just fine. Just fine, indeed. A career is quite long in their world. I heard they said he is a good boy.
Now, you take care, and you remember what I said. That Matt Cassel, he’s a good one. A good football player, and a good man, I’m sure. You won’t forget him, now, will ya? He’s worth remembering, that one. He’s a real example of what hard work can do. Even if you’re a backup, you can still make it big. Just gotta keep at it, like Matt did. Just gotta keep at it.
