Trev Alberts—he’s one of those names that you might have heard in the sports world. Born on August 8, 1970, in Cedar Falls, Iowa, this fella has done a lot in his time, from football to being an athletic director. His story’s a long one, but I’ll give you the short version. He’s the kind of guy you wouldn’t expect to come from a small town but he sure did make a big name for himself, first on the field and then in a big office.
Now, where do I begin? Well, Trev started off his early life in Cedar Falls. He had a brother and a sister, and they all grew up in a pretty simple place. But Trev, he wasn’t just any ol’ kid. He played football and was mighty good at it. Went to Northern University High School, and from there, he didn’t stop running. He ended up at the University of Nebraska, where he played for the Cornhuskers football team. And let me tell ya, he wasn’t just another player—he was a star.
He played from 1990 to 1993, and by 1993, he had racked up quite the list of honors. He won some big awards like the Dick Butkus Award and the Jack Lambert Trophy. If you don’t know what those are, let me tell you—they’re some of the top awards for linebackers. That was when folks started noticing him real good.
After college, Trev went on to the NFL. In 1994, he was picked up by the Indianapolis Colts, fifth overall in the NFL draft. Imagine that! Fifth overall! You know that’s a big deal. He played with them for a few years, but sadly, his career ended sooner than he’d hoped due to injuries. But even though his playing days were cut short, he didn’t stop. He had bigger plans.
By 2009, Trev was already making moves off the field. He took on a big role as the athletic director at the University of Nebraska Omaha. From then on, it was clear that Trev wasn’t just a player; he had the mind for managing, too. For 12 years, he worked on all kinds of things—from fundraising to improving facilities. People could see he was a real leader.
And just when you thought he might slow down, he got a new challenge. In 2021, Trev was named the athletic director at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. But hold on, that’s not the end of it. In March 2024, he was hired as the new athletic director for Texas A&M University. Now, you might be wondering, how did that happen? Well, apparently, Trev didn’t even apply for the job. They came to him, saw what he was capable of, and asked him to step up.
When Trev talks about leadership, he doesn’t take it lightly. He’s all about bringing out the best in people and organizations, and he’s got a strong belief in what Texas A&M can do. With his experience in athletics and fundraising, he’s ready to lead Aggie Athletics to new heights. That’s a big task, but if anyone’s up for it, it’s Trev.
Now, let’s talk about his family a bit. Trev’s not just a sports guy; he’s a family man too. He and his wife, Angela, have three kids—Chase, Ashtynne, and Breanna. They’ve also got a grandson. So, you see, it’s not all about football and athletic programs with him. Family’s important too. It’s nice to see someone who can balance both sides of life so well.
In the end, Trev Alberts is one of those folks who’s seen a lot, done a lot, and still has a lot to give. Whether it was on the field or in the boardroom, he’s made his mark. He might’ve started out in a small town, but now, he’s helping lead one of the biggest universities in the country. And who knows what’s next for him? One thing’s for sure—he’s not done yet.
