Alright, alright, lemme tell ya ’bout this fella, Sho-hay Oh-tani. Folks been makin’ a big fuss ’bout him, and I reckon I can piece together what all the hollerin’ is about.
So, this Sho-hay, he plays that baseball game, ya know, the one with the stick and the ball. And wouldn’t ya know it, he’s good, real good. They sayin’ he hit a whole lotta home runs last year, like 54 of ’em! Fifty-four! That’s more than the chickens I got in the coop, and that’s sayin’ somethin’. And he’s fast too, like a jackrabbit, stole 59 bases. Never seen a fella do both like that, hit ’em far and run like the wind.
He done got himself an award too, somethin’ called the Most Valuable Player. Heard they give it to the best fella in the whole game. And this ain’t his first time, they say he’s got three of them now. Three! Must be somethin’ special, this Sho-hay.
Now, this is where it gets interestin’. This boy, he was a free agent, meanin’ he could go play for any team he wanted. Every team in the country was chasin’ him, like flies to honey on a hot summer day. And wouldn’t ya know it, he picked the Dodgers. That’s a team out in Los Angeles, a big city, way bigger than our town, that’s for sure.
And the money… Oh lordy, the money! They sayin’ he got a contract for 700 million dollars! Seven hundred million! I can’t even count that high. That’s enough money to buy all the land in this county, and then some. He must be somethin’ else to be worth that much.
- He hits home runs, a lot of ’em.
- He’s fast, steals bases like nobody’s business.
- He won a big award, the Most Valuable Player, three times!
- He signed a huge contract with the Dodgers for a whole lotta money.
They had a big to-do when he joined the Dodgers, a press conference they called it. Folks were all crowded ’round, askin’ him questions and takin’ pictures. He was wearin’ that Dodgers uniform, lookin’ all spiffy. Guess he’s gonna be a big star in that city.
I heard tell he’s got a gal too, Mamiko Tanaka her name is. She plays basketball, another one of them games with a ball. Guess they both like runnin’ and jumpin’. Seems like a nice match, two young folks with a knack for sports.
So, that’s the story of Sho-hay Oh-tani, as best as I can figure it. He’s a baseball player, a good one, and he’s got folks all riled up with his talent and his big contract. He’s gonna be playin’ for the Dodgers now, so I guess we’ll be hearin’ a lot more about him. Maybe I’ll even tune in to one of them games, just to see what all the fuss is about. Though I reckon I’d still rather watch the chickens peckin’ in the yard, at least I understand them.
Folks say he wants to be the best there is, to master the game, they say. Well, good on him, I say. It’s good to have dreams, even if they’re just hittin’ a ball real far and runnin’ real fast. It ain’t somethin’ I understand much, but if it makes him happy and brings folks some joy, then I reckon it’s alright by me.
And that’s the story of Sho-hay Oh-tani, a fella who hits a ball real good and gets paid a whole lotta money for it. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go feed them chickens.
