Okay, so everyone’s been talking about Charley Hull and her smoking at the US Open, right? I saw all those posts and got curious. I mean, I kinda get it, golf can be stressful, but I wanted to see what the big deal was. So, I did a little experiment of my own.
First, I went out and bought a pack of cigarettes. I haven’t smoked in years, so this was already weird. Then, I found a local golf course, paid for a round, and headed to the first tee. I’m not a great golfer, but I can hold my own, you know?
- Tried to light up, but the wind kept blowing out my lighter.
- Finally got one lit and took a drag. Coughing fit ensued. Not glamorous at all.
- Tried to focus on my swing, but the cigarette just felt awkward and distracting.
- Kept dropping ashes everywhere, felt like a total noob.
The whole thing was a mess. I was hacking away, leaving divots, and my score was, let’s just say, not my best. People were staring, and not in a good way. I felt self-conscious and like I was disrespecting the game and other players. After a few holes, I was over it. I tossed the rest of the pack in the trash, finished my round (poorly), and went home.
My takeaways from this little experiment?
- Smoking on the course is not cool or glamorous.
- It’s distracting as hell, for you and everyone around you.
- It doesn’t make you a better golfer, that’s for sure. It doesn’t even make you feel better.
- Charley Hull might be able to pull it off, but I sure can’t.
- If I have a chance to meet her, I will ask her about it. I wonder what she thinks about smoking.
- To be honest, I am not a fan of John Daly.
Look, I get that everyone deals with stress differently, but there are way better ways than lighting up on the golf course. Maybe Charley just had a moment, or maybe she has her reasons. But for me, this little test confirmed that smoking and golfing just don’t mix. Trust me, leave the cigarettes at home, folks.
