So, the other day, I was just kicking back, watching some football, you know? And this quarterback comes on screen, I forget who exactly, but it got me thinking. He looked pretty tall, but then I remembered some other guys who seemed shorter. It just popped into my head: what’s the actual average height for these NFL quarterbacks?

Naturally, I pulled out my phone right there on the couch. My first thought was just to type it straight into a search engine. Something like “average nfl quarterback height”.
A bunch of stuff came up, articles, stat pages, fan forums. I clicked on a few. It wasn’t like some big secret, you know? Most places seemed to agree on a general range.
My Findings
From what I gathered poking around different sites, it looks like most starting quarterbacks these days hover around the 6 foot 2 inches to 6 foot 4 inches mark. That seems to be the sweet spot teams often look for.
I even looked up a few specific guys just to see:
- Guys like Justin Herbert or Trevor Lawrence? Yeah, they are definitely on the taller side, pushing 6’6″.
- Then you got guys like Tua Tagovailoa or maybe Kyler Murray, who are closer to the 6-foot mark, maybe even a bit under. Bryce Young is notably shorter too.
So, while there’s definitely an average, there’s also quite a bit of variation still. It’s not like every single one is exactly 6’3″.
Final Thoughts
It seems like being tall definitely helps – seeing over the big linemen, you know? Makes sense. But seeing the range, from the shorter guys who are super quick and agile to the really tall pocket passers, it tells me height isn’t the only thing that matters. Plenty of guys who weren’t giants have had amazing careers. Think Drew Brees or Russell Wilson.
Anyway, that was my little journey into quarterback heights. Just started with a simple question while watching a game and ended up learning a bit more about how these teams build their rosters. Pretty interesting stuff when you actually stop and look it up.
