Okay, so the other day I got curious about just how tall NFL quarterbacks really are, on average. You see these guys on TV, some look huge, others maybe not so much compared to the linemen. I figured, let me try and figure out a typical height.

Getting the Numbers
First thing I did was hop online. Didn’t need anything too fancy, just started searching around for lists of current NFL quarterbacks and their heights. You know how it is, bounced around a few sports sites, maybe checked a couple of roster pages. Some sites had lists, some you had to click on individual player profiles. It took a little bit of time, honestly, to gather a decent list of names and their listed heights. I tried to grab as many starters and prominent backups as I could find to get a good sample.
The heights were mostly listed in feet and inches, like 6′ 2″, 6′ 5″, etc. That’s easy enough to read, but not great for doing math.
Doing the Math
So, the next step was converting everything. I decided inches were the way to go. Made a simple list, or you could use a spreadsheet, doesn’t matter. For each quarterback, I converted their height into total inches. You know, basic stuff:
- Take the feet, multiply by 12.
- Add the inches.
- So, like, a guy listed at 6′ 3″ becomes (6 12) + 3 = 75 inches.
I went down my list and did this for every single player I had gathered. Ended up with a long column of numbers in inches.
Once I had all the heights in inches, I just added them all up. Got a big total number representing the combined height of all the QBs on my list.
Then, I counted how many quarterbacks I actually had on my list. Let’s say I had collected data for, I don’t know, maybe 40-50 guys, whatever the number was.
The final step was simple division. I took the total inches (that big number) and divided it by the number of quarterbacks I counted. That gave me the average height in inches.
The Result (Roughly)
After doing the division, the number I got was somewhere around 75 to 76 inches. To make that make sense again in feet and inches, I divided that average by 12. It came out to be basically around 6 feet 3 inches or maybe a touch taller, like 6′ 3.5″ on average, based on the players I looked up.

So yeah, that was my little project. Just involved a bit of searching, some simple conversion, adding things up, and dividing. It gives you a pretty good idea that most starting QBs in the league are reasonably tall dudes, clustering around that six-three mark. Interesting stuff just from poking around online for a bit.
