Okay, so today I messed around with something called “fab four basketball.” I’d heard about it and thought, “Why not give it a shot?” So I did, and here’s how it went down.

First, I had to figure out exactly what this “fab four” thing even was. I did some digging, watched a few videos, and got the basic idea. It’s all about these four core skills: dribbling, passing, shooting, and defense. Sounds simple, right? Well, not so fast.
Getting Started: Dribbling Drills
I started with dribbling. I’m not gonna lie, I felt a little clumsy at first. I grabbed my basketball, and I went outside to the driveway. I just started dribbling around like normal, and man, I was all over the place.
- Figure Eights: I tried weaving the ball between my legs, making a figure-eight pattern. I kept losing control at my first try.
- Crossovers: Switching the ball from one hand to the other quickly. I almost tripped a few times. I need to move my feet faster.
- Behind the Back: Yeah, this one was tough. The ball ended up bouncing off my foot more times than I’d like to admit.
After about 30 minutes of that, my arms were burning, and my pride was a little bruised, but hey, I was moving.
Moving On: Passing Practice
Next up, passing. I roped my friend into helping me out. We’re no pros, obviously, but it was good to have someone to throw the ball to.
- Chest Passes: Basic, straight-to-the-chest throws. We got into a decent rhythm after a while.
- Bounce Passes: Aiming for the floor, so the ball bounces up to your teammate. We messed up the angles a lot at first.
- Overhead Passes: Throwing the ball over our heads, like a soccer throw-in. My aim was way off on some of these.
We did this for maybe 45 minutes, switching between the different passes. It felt good to actually connect with someone, even if it was just a simple chest pass.
Shooting Time: It’s Harder Than It Looks
Shooting. Oh boy. This is where things got really interesting. I’ve shot hoops before, but never with any real focus on technique.
- Free Throws: I lined up at the imaginary free-throw line and tried to get that perfect arc. My shots were either way too short or way too long.
- Jump Shots: Jumping and releasing the ball at the peak of the jump. My timing was completely off. I felt like I was throwing, not shooting.
- Layups: Dribbling towards the basket and then tossing the ball in. I kept bumping into the backboard.
I spent a solid hour on shooting, and I think I made maybe 20% of my shots. It was frustrating, but I also kind of enjoyed the challenge.
Defense: Trying Not to Get Faked Out
Finally, defense. Since I had my friend there, we took turns playing offense and defense. I’m not the quickest guy, so I had to really focus.

- Defensive Stance: Staying low, knees bent, arms out. My legs were killing me after just a few minutes.
- Shuffling: Moving side-to-side without crossing your feet. I felt like I was dancing, but not in a good way.
- Staying in Front: Trying to block my friend’s path to the basket. He got past me more times than I’d like to admit.
Defense was tiring, but it also made me think more strategically. It wasn’t just about reacting, it was about anticipating.
So, that was my day with “fab four basketball.” I’m definitely no expert, but I can see why these skills are so important. It’s a lot harder than it looks, but it’s also a really good workout, and honestly, it was kind of fun, even when I was messing up. I might actually keep practicing this stuff. Who knows, maybe I’ll even get good at it someday.
