Alright, guys, so I’ve been seeing a ton of chatter online about who can actually stand up to Mauga in Overwatch 2. He’s a beast, no doubt, but he’s not invincible. So, I jumped into the game to do some serious testing and, well, let me tell you, it was a journey.

First, I tried the usual suspects. You know, the heroes everyone thinks should counter him. I went with Reaper, thinking his shotguns would shred Mauga up close. Nope. Got absolutely demolished. Mauga’s just too tanky, and his Overrun ability made it super hard to stay in close range effectively.
Then, I figured, okay, let’s try some range. Ashe? Widowmaker? Nope, and nope. Mauga’s got that Cardiac Overdrive, which gives him and nearby allies a ton of lifesteal. So, even if I landed some shots, he’d just heal right back up, or his team would body-block. Plus his charge gets on you, and you dead.
Experimenting with Different Tactics
After those initial failures, I started getting a little more creative. I thought about heroes who could disrupt his abilities, rather than just trying to out-damage him. That’s when things started to click.
- Ana: Oh boy, Ana is a game-changer. Her Biotic Grenade completely shuts down Mauga’s self-healing. It’s beautiful. I landed a couple of well-timed grenades, and suddenly, this unstoppable force became…stoppable. Sleep Dart is also huge, obviously, but the grenade is the key.
- Sigma: Okay, hear me out. Sigma’s Experimental Barrier can block a surprising amount of Mauga’s damage, and his Kinetic Grasp can absorb a good chunk of his fire, too. Plus, Accretion (his rock) can interrupt Mauga’s Overrun or even his ultimate. I managed to consistently disrupt Mauga’s plays with Sigma, even if I wasn’t getting solo kills.
- Zarya: This was a surprising one. Zarya’s bubbles can cleanse the burning effect from Mauga’s incendiary chaingun, and a high-energy Zarya can melt him. The trick is to play smart, use cover, and get those bubbles on your teammates (and yourself) when Mauga focuses fire. I definitely saw a difference when I played Zarya aggressively but with good bubble management.
- Orisa:Her fortify negates cage fight and overrun and her javelin spin can really help push him back/ interrupt his flow. Also, her spear can stun him out of abilities.
The Not-So-Successful Attempts
Not everything I tried worked, though. I spent a good hour trying to make Bastion work, thinking his Configuration: Assault form would tear through Mauga. It didn’t. Mauga’s armor and self-sustain, combined with the support he usually gets from his team, made it almost impossible to burst him down before he could get to cover or charge me down.
The Verdict (For Now)
So, after all that experimenting, here’s what I’ve found: Mauga is strong, but he does have counters. Ana is probably the most consistent and impactful, but Sigma and Zarya can also put in serious work if played correctly. It’s all about disrupting his abilities and denying his self-healing. Don’t try to brute-force it; you gotta outsmart him. And it will require team * your dps or tank pick any hero and are not effective, then is not possible to counter him alone.
I’m still testing, though! This is just my initial impression after a few days of dedicated Mauga-hunting. Let me know in the comments who you’ve had success with – I’m always looking for new strategies!
